Togetherness (for Sian & Tom)
Write me a poem about being together…
One wonders where to rhyme it with weather
Or whether to say
‘Weathering the storms‘ altogether
Yet like relationships
The best lines of a poem
Are not made to be a perfect fit
In poetry & life we must aim
For a richer deeper vein
And always try to ascertain
The hidden rhythm and rhyme
That connects our lives
Ladies & gentleman
We are gathered here to day to see
A brave and almost foolhardy thing
Two people’s lives have intersected such
That they are willing to try
To complete the imperfect circle
From time to time
They may see eye to eye
On this or that
Yet to uncover the meaning of today
They here agree
To agree to disagree
In the long intervals in between
I have heard said, and read,
That love is like two trees
Intermingling to become one
That type of poem may do
For the feeble and the young
It appears to me that love
Is much stronger than that
For what tree ever argued with itself?
A better image to imagine would be
Two trees in an orchard contentedly
Separate in space and in time
And knowing they can never be
As one
Leaves fall and summers breeze
The rain & wind
Shakes the boughs
& the trees stay rooted & strong
Gazing at each other through the years
Until at last one winter too many falls
One might say
How sad to be a tree
Condemned to be alone.
But we should say happy trees!
You shared so much together
And knew each other better
Than you knew yourselves
It is the space between us
That defines us & our love for each other
The space we allow each other
To breathe & grow
So if you must spend your lives
Trying to be together
Remember
The test is not how close you are
But how you live with
The distance between you
May you spend your
Lives exploring and guarding
The space around you
`Who knows what may grow
in the ground between?’

I am a self-taught realist painter, working in acrylics on canvas. I focus mainly on portrait and figure painting. In 1995, I began teaching myself to draw in graphite on paper. After two years, I felt I had learned enough to start trying to paint. It was initially frustrating, because in many ways I had to start all over. My early paintings were terrible, not anywhere near as good as my drawings. Handling a liquid medium, learning color mixing, and figuring out what order in which to do things took another two years. Instead of taking classes, which I could not afford, I went to Seattle’s Frye Art Museum nearly every day, to study their permanent collection and see exhibitions by artists like Steven Assael. Back then, in the late 90s, Richard West was still director, so the museum was adhering to its stated commitment to representational art. They have since broadened their definition of representational art into meaninglessness.
In 2003, someone told me about a call for artists for a show at the Bemis Building, an artists’ cooperative, which was sponsoring a juried exhibition. I had never shown work anywhere, and had no educational credentials, but I submitted some slides of my work. They accepted three canvases for their 2003 Fall Art Show. I was one of two realist painters in a show of post-modern painting, installation, and sculpture. I was nervous, but I really enjoyed meeting other artists and knowing that I was good enough to get into an actual art exhibition.
Since then, I have done a few portrait commissions, and sold some paintings in small venues like salons, and on Ebay, but have had no contact with other artists, except my mother, who is an expressionist painter, and my brother who is a published poet with one book credit so far. I just found out about tailcast yesterday (May 3, 2008) and am enjoying the contact with other artists already!
